Virtual Assistant Tips

3 Secrets to Breaking into the VA World

systems before scaling

It was just a year ago when I started my business as a virtual assistant (now turned OBM) and I can remember vividly the fear I felt.

Will I book clients?

Can I actually make this work?

Will people hire me without having been a VA before?

Let me tell you friend, we all start somewhere!

Which is why I want to let you in on 3 secrets that I think will change your mindset around starting or growing your own virtual assistant business…

READY?

Okay… here goes!

01. You DON’T need to know how to do everything…

Really, truly… you don’t. I always say start with what you know, leverage your current skills and learn along the way. Have you met Youtube? Then you know as well as I know you can basically learn about anything on the internet these days!

I definitely didn’t know everything I know to do now when I started a year ago, and I’m continuously learning new things ON THE DAILY!

02. Finding ways to gain “enough” experience isn’t going to jumpstart your business..

I can’t count the amount of times I see people advertising to work for FREE in virtual assistant Facebook groups. PLEASE DON’T DO THIS. When I say you don’t need to practice your skills for free, I mean it. There are a million entrepreneurs out there who will willingly train you for the job. You do not need to work for free to gain experience.

NOW…

With that being said… also don’t promise people you can do something for their business when in fact you have no clue how to do ‘said thing’. This is a straight way to lose clients and typically their circle of entrepreneur friends will be encouraged to avoid you too. DON’T DO IT.

03. A big social media following is great- but that’s the last thing you want to be spending your time on if you want to ditch your 9-5 for the laptop freedom life!

How many times have you heard you need to have a great big following or presence on social media? Yeah… me too… and you know what? I’m calling BS. I have 1500 followers and I can tell you not all 1500 are engaged and I have created a profitable and successful business from the ground up. and YOU can too! I promise!

So there you have it friend, the 3 secrets to help you jumpstart your VA biz and give you a little encouragement as you go.

Why Growth Exposes What’s Broken Growth has a way of telling the truth. At the beginning of a business, things can feel scrappy but manageable. You’re close to every detail, decisions are quick, and even inefficient processes can slide by unnoticed. But as revenue increases and complexity builds, the cracks don’t just stay cracks… they […]

CEO leadership vs management

When “Hands-On” Stops Being Helpful In the early stages of building a business, proximity is power. You know every client. You oversee every detail. You make decisions quickly because you’re close to the work. That level of involvement is often what creates early momentum. It allows you to shape culture, maintain quality, and build trust. For a […]

operational rhythm for CEOs

Why Time Scarcity Persists — Even After You “Make It” Many founders assume time scarcity is a phase. Something that resolves itself once revenue stabilizes or the team grows. But for many 6–7 figure CEOs, time feels more constrained than ever. Not because they’re failing, but because success introduces: The issue is not effort. It’s lack of rhythm. […]
